1 or 2 day Short Course

Make your own hand-stitched foldover hip pack or crossbody pouch.

In this class, you will be introduced to the art & craft of making leather goods by hand. We will cover all the basics of how to construct your own hand-stitched piece and at the end of the class, you will be able to take your own project home with you. All tools & materials will be provided for your studio use in order to complete the project .

The course is designed as a stand alone course to be completed in one day, Saturday. However, a 2nd day, (but the 1st day in the sequence) has been added to go deeper into the project. The breakdown is as follows:

SATURDAY (stand alone leather project class):

·      You will arrive to the studio in DTLA and we will start by going over the basics of leather, the tools we will be using, and an overview of the type of leather we will be using and why.

·      You will be provided with a pre-cut piece of leather for the project of your choice (hip pack or crossbody)

·      From there, you will learn the following things needed in order to complete the project :

·      Surface Treatment

·      Edge Finishing

·      Hole Punching

·      Riveting

·      Assembly

·      Saddle Stitching.

At the end of the day, you will have the finished piece, ready to take home

 

FRIDAY:

** PLEASE NOTE: This is an add-on day BEFORE the stand-alone one day course. This day is provided as an option to go deeper into patternmaking basics and cutting. Proper pattern making is the fundamental core of making leather goods. With basic pattern making knowledge, you will be able to design, concept, and create basic to intermediate patterns on your own time **

·      You will arrive to the studio in DTLA and we will start by going over the basics of patternmaking and cutting. This includes proper control and handling of the blades.

·      You will start by practicing using the blades on both paper and leather

·      You will be instructed on how to create your own basic patterns. With this knowledge, you can go on to make basic to intermediate patterns for your own projects.

·      You will use the pattern that we create to cut out and prep the pieces for Sundays leather working class.

1 Day Short Course

Leather Finishing 101

 

In this class, you will be introduced art & craft of finishing vegetable tanned leather. Vegetable tanned leather is raw naked leather, which is able to be dyed, polished, and treated in many ways. We will experiment with dying, edge finishing, topcoats,  color sealants, and differenttechniques and applications for bringing your vegetable tanned leather piece to life.

 

The course is designed as a stand alone course to be completed in one day, Saturday.  Breakdown of what we will be covering is as follows:

 

·      You will arrive to the studio in DTLA and we will start by going over the basics of vegetable tanned leather, the tools we will be using, and an overview of the type of properties of this leather we will be using and why.

·      You will be provided with a pre-cut piece of leather, and plenty of scraps, for all the various techniques we will be covering.

·      From there, you will learn the following things needed in order to complete the workshop:

·      Color Dying

·      Color Fastness

·      Edge Finishing

·      Edge Dying

·      Top Coat And Finish Experimentation

·      Open Studio (If time permits, we can create individual pieces using some of the techniques we just learned)

·      Discussion and Q&A about other pre-tanned types of leather and how to work with them.

 

At the end of the day, we will have all the different treatment type pieces, along with any notes you may have on what we did, to take home with you as reference.
